Deuteronomy 6:four–9, referred to as the Shema, from Hebrew šāmaʽ for “hear” (v. four), is the fundamental Jewish confession of religion recited by each religious Jew twice day by day to remind them of the primary and second commandments (Exodus 20:2–6).
