You Are Not the Solely One
“Due to this fact, there’s now no condemnation for many who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (NIV)
I used to be speaking lately with my good friend Jamie after she’d had an extended, disappointing Monday.
Regardless of her greatest efforts, the whole lot went mistaken. Pissed off and discouraged, she lamented that on the finish of her day, whereas baking cookies for a sick good friend — and burning half of them — she caved and inhaled a handful of the sweets.
And that’s just the start. After consuming these cookies, Jamie carried immense guilt and disgrace on prime of the whole lot else that had gone mistaken on that horrible, rotten, no-good day.
I’ve been there. My guess is you’ve gotten, too.
As soon as, when my children had been little, I got here up with the sensible concept to ask all of the fourth grade mothers from my son’s faculty over for espresso, dialog and do-it-yourself chocolate chip cookies.
It appeared like a good suggestion, however my plan to win associates and affect individuals via chocolate shortly crumbled. Whereas making an attempt to roll store-bought dough onto cookie sheets and frantically hiding all our muddle — I gave in and ate (extra like “sucked down”) 4 ooey, gooey heat and chewy cookies.
Later that week, I sunk into my therapist’s sofa and cried. I used to be disgusted with myself and stuffed with self-loathing and disgrace. Why? Due to the cookies. I used to be sick of pretending to have all of it collectively when the fact was, I used to be hanging on by a thread — a skinny thread at that.
In my eager for connection and acceptance, I attempted to numb my emotions with do-it-yourself cookies. And afterward, what did I do? I let the enemy weigh me down with lies, guilt and disgrace.
My therapist nodded. “Cindy, do you suppose you’re the solely girl who has eaten do-it-yourself cookies?”
“However I ate 4 cookies. Not one, not two, however 4,” I roared, as if she couldn’t perceive the which means of the quantity 4.
“Cindy, do you suppose you’re the solely girl who has eaten FOUR of her do-it-yourself cookies?” my therapist replied.
“Um, yeah, most likely not.”
So, after I listened to my good friend Jamie describe her self-loathing over consuming her chocolate chip cookies, I recycled my therapist’s query.
“Jamie, do you suppose you’re the solely girl who has eaten do-it-yourself cookies? As a result of, good friend, you might be not the one one.”
And the phrases I gave Jamie are the phrases I need to provide you with: You aren’t the one one.
- You aren’t the one one who deviated out of your wholesome consuming plan.
- You aren’t the one one who feels dissatisfied, discouraged or overwhelmed.
- You aren’t the one one who wonders in case you’re “sufficient” in comparison with airbrushed perfection.
Clearly, we all know there are much more severe points that may trigger disgrace or guilt or lead one to land on a therapist’s sofa. (As a former cocaine addict, consider me, I do know.) However it doesn’t matter what sin you’ve dedicated, you’re the one Jesus loves!
Candy good friend, you and I aren’t meant to stay below harsh judgment, condemnation and self-loathing.
Fortunately, God’s Phrase speaks Reality to you, me, and cookie-lovers in all places. Romans 8:1 says, “Due to this fact, there’s now no condemnation for many who are in Christ Jesus.”
Jesus convicts us, however He by no means condemns. In Him, we’re forgiven and free. No guilt. No disgrace. No extra wallowing in what He has washed clear.
And after we perceive God is FOR us and loves us it doesn’t matter what, we may give the identical grace to ourselves that we lengthen to our associates.
We might by no means say to a good friend who over-indulged on one thing, “You stink. You haven’t any self-control. You are a shame.”
So why can we permit such horrible, rubbish ideas to fill our heads?!
Let’s select grace over guilt.
Let’s select kindness over criticism.
Let’s select Reality over lies.
Let’s select God’s love over self-loathing.
